What do you associate with summer? Me? Shaved ice, gelato, ocean, jet contrail, summer vacation, iced herbal tea, twinkling stars, and beer. Although I am not a big fan of the taste of beers and am a light drinker (in other words, I don't think I can retain good amount of alcohol in my body system), summer reminds me of a cold beer.
Of course, you would grab a bite to eat with some beer (if you are a beer lover), wouldn't you? Edamame, as far as I know, is the best and well-known small bite that goes so well with beers in summer.
Edamame, green soybeans, is the Japanese summer vegetable that has beautiful green color and 3 or 4 beans in each pocket. Usually, we just boil edamame in hot water with pinch of salt. This is how we serve edamame traditionally. How easy! Of course, there are some more recipes to cook edamame. I hope I can introduce you some unique recipes later.
Now, edamame has been gaining popularity outside of Japan. You could find edamame in the most of Japanese restaurants in abroad, which we are very very proud of as Japanese!
Do you know that edamame has full of nutrition which work perfectly to combat against summer fatigue?
Well, what's edamame, actually?
Baby beans of soybeans are referred to as edamame which belongs to the group of green and yellow vegetable. It is interesting that edamame contains nutrition as a vegetable and a bean, such as lectin, vitamin B1, B2, calcium, fiber, carotene, and iron.
I guess it is so great that edamame contains vitamin A and C, as well, which soybeans don't contain! As you know, vitamin A and vitamin C relate to beauty (e.g., smooth skin, good vision, etc). As methionine, the protein in edamame, stimulates alcohol decomposition by working with vitamin B1 and vitamin C and helps liver function working properly, edamame is absolutely perfect taken in summer when drinking too much or hungover.
This might be the reason why edamame is known as the best otsumami (small bite to eat with drinks) to eat with beers in summer. No wonder!
Also, do you know edamame helps sodium which causes high blood pressure discharge from body system and contains potassium that works as diuretic effect? I bet that some of you would experience that your body feels like swollen with excessive water retains in your body system. Due to high temperature in summer, we tend to be exhausted and strain our hearts. This routine hurts the system of heart and hearts don't work properly which produces swell of legs or even the whole body. So potassium in edamame adjusts our water in the body and works effectively to get rid of swells.
If you love to drink especially in summer, edamame is recommended to take as the king of beans. Too much drinking is not good but moderate drinking with some edamame besides you is such a fun!
